Five pages a day, again.

Five pages a day, again.

If we’re friends on Instagram, you might have seen my efforts a few months ago to jumpstart my reading game again called “five pages a day.”

It was a reminder to myself that, like it sounds, I JUST need to read five pages a day to keep my reading muscles strong. Because usually after those five pages come another fifty, and then another chapter, and then another book.

I was the kid who got in trouble for reading under the dinner table, for god’s sake. And yet now, as an actual adult with a brain, I hardly ever make the time to sit and finish that last book in the series or start one of the many Book of the Month selections that have arrived at my doorstep.

It’s almost embarrassing, but even in a quarantine, I have finished… one book. One book that I started, whilst in the middle of several other books, because my friend specifically recommended it.

Yes, you are seeing that correctly. The one book I have finished in the last three months is the first book in the Cormoran Strike series, written by JK Rowling under a pseudonym until she was revealed after the first couple of books were published. Knowing what a Potterphile I am, is it any surprise?

(The surprise is probably that I haven’t already plowed through them all…)

While my reading muscles are not at full throttle these days, my reading list certainly is. I have tried to pare down my book-buying, but being a monthly member of Book of the Month means I am certainly adding at least one new fiction title to my shelf, without reading as quickly to clear space on the shelf.

Oh, and have you noticed that none of the books shown above have that trademark BotM binding? LOLZ. That’s because I keep buying “regular” print books too, like a lunatic.

However, the books above are all on my immediate To Read or In Progress lists:

  1. I’m halfway through Untamed, and I feel like I am just getting into it and want to give it a second read right after I finish so that I can actually process some of the wisdom. I love reading about Glennon and Abby’s love story, among other things!

  2. The Silkworm is the second Cormoran Strike novel and I’m halfway through this one too. This will probably be the first one of the five that I finish, and I just received book 3 in the mail today. It’s sitting by the door waiting for the germs to die.

  3. Meg & Jo is a modern retelling of Little Women that I bought at the SeaTac airport on my way back from visiting my best friend in January. I read half the book while waiting for my flight and haven’t picked it up since, but it’s been a staple of my bedstand. I think it’s probably about time to finish it and pass it along to someone else for a light read!

  4. In the Woods was gifted to me by Freyan ages and ages ago, and I’ve heard such good things about Tana French’s writing. I think this is probably the time to dive in.

  5. Last but not least… American Royals was so lauded last summer/fall that I spent $25 on this hardcover version at Books, Inc. And then I never touched it. What is wrong with me?! It’s time. It’s time. It’s time. I need some royalty-related chick fic in my life.

I’m hoping that by proclaiming my list, I might actually make some progress on these this month and be able to lend my little book babies out to other bibliophiles. If not, well… y’all can look forward to another list next month to shame myself into reading before bed. Hey, it works!

So, what do you say - will you join me in reading Five Pages a Day? If I can do it, you can do it. Let’s read some words together friends.
